Mod Podge Suncatchers

I love getting ideas for fun and easy kids crafts from other bloggers.

One of my favorite mediums to work with is decoupage aka Mod Podge. I found a great blog for decoupage projects and the the first one we tried was the suncatcher.

We started out by glueing together our "petals". The kids did this in whatever shape they wanted. You need to make sure they are level so the Mod Podge doesn't leak out too much when you pour it in the petals.

For this entire project we used items that we already had on hand...basically making it FREE!!

I had purple, blue, and white tissue paper. No one wanted white so we used the other two colors, purple for girly and blue for the boys!

We cut the tissue down to size and then placed it on a plastic bag. I wanted to make sure that the suncatcher didn't get stuck on whatever it was laying on to dry. The plastic bag made sense because it could be peeled off later. I also had the kids do this on cookie sheets so they could be easily moved from the table for drying...which took about 3 days.

We mainly used beads in the design with a bit of sparkly ribbon that I cut up to make little bitty pieces. You could easily use sequins and glitter but we were sticking to the free method! :)

Notice the small amount of leakage around the edges...this is why it's important to get it level when glueing. Also it's good to have two sets of hands when pouring the Mod Podge in. One person can hold down on the design while the other slowly poors.

We used these as teachers gifts! We paired it up with some delicious chocolate, afordable and thoughtful!

Next time we will make some to keep. I am thinking we will use some of the seashells we found on our beach vacation this past summer!

This is very near and dear to my heart since I do make handmade items for sale...

"February 10, 2009 has been dubbed "national bankruptcy day" because of a new law that will take effect that day. It will require ALL businesses to do lead testing on EVERYTHING that is made for children 12 and under -- even small, artisan businesses.

If you buy or sell handmade toys, clothing, cloth diapers, or babycarriers the following is really important information for you. As of February 10th, 2009 ALL items sold in the US that are meant for children 12 years and younger will be required to have third-party lead testing done by the manufacturer. This sounds great in theory since we all want to protect our children, right? This law will only force small businesses to close (or operate illegally) when the problem lies with large companies making cheap items in foreign countries.

DO YOU MAKE OR SELL THESE ITEMS? If you own a small home based business crafting these items, these requirements fall on YOU. You will be required to test each and every component of your items for sale and label them with a batch# and date of manufacture. If you do not comply you will be in violation of federal law and could be subject to fines up to $5,000 . Anything children's items made before this date that are not tested and cerified lead-free are considered banned hazardous waste and cannot be sold after February 10th, 2009. Even if you use materials such as fabric that were tested by their manufacturer not to contain lead, you must still have third party testing done. This is obviously not an option for most artisan businesses! Please call or write your representatives regarding the new CPSIA legislation that has already passed and will be put into effect in February without any thought for the `little guys'.

DO YOU BUY THESE ITEMS, OR VALUE THE ABILITY TO BUY THEM? Then you need email or write your representatives today as well. If this legislation is not changed to offer some sort of clarification regarding handcrafting businesses in the US, then many if not most of the items I've discussed will no longer be available. No more wood cars crafted by a retired grandpa, no more children's handmade clothing and cloth diapers on Hyena Cart, Etsy and sites that encourage us to buy handmade. I don't know if you feel the same but if I had to choose between a handmade item made by a work at home mom vsa "certified lead-free" item made in China and sold at Target, I'd choose the former.

We must act soon and get some changes made or February 10th will mean the end of the "Buy Handmade" movement! Stand up for small businesses everywhere as this legislation effects each and every one of us, our businesses, our children and even our economy.

Let your representatives know that as much as we value keeping our children safe by testing items for lead, this is the WRONG way to accomplish that.

The Pirate Party

After a lot of planning and getting the house ready for a ton of kids we had a blast putting on a pirate birthday party for Jacob!

We had a lot of pirate decorations...

and pirate themed games and crafts for the party guests!

The kids played:

"Walked The Plank" - I divided them up into two teams for a relay race. I then put a 2x4 down on the floor for each team. Following this was a large box to crawl through...this was "The Cave", then I had tossed out over 100 pieces of pirates gold. The kids had to balance across the planks, crawl through the cave, gather some gold, and go back the way they came and tag the next person on their team! It was a blast!
"Pin the Flag on the X" - I gave the kids a small piece of paper and explained that pirates always had their own flag with a special design on it. I gave them crayons and they designed their very own pirate flag. Then we used those flags to play a pirate version of pin the tail on the donkey. David had made a pirate map and we hung it on the wall, blindfolded the kids, spun them around, and let them try to hit the X with their flag! We had a huge tie!
"Canon Ball Stomp" - We had blown up a ton of black ballons and used these as our cannonballs. We tied them on the ankles of each child and then they played a game of tag. The object was to protect your own cannonball while trying to pop everyone else's ball!
"Treasure hunt" - Before the party started I came up with a list of clues, printed them out on paper, cut them up and placed them all over our yard. We started in the party room and the first clue took them outside. The kids all got their jackets and shoes on and out we went.....to the patio, then the mailbox, then the swingset, then the front porch, the a tree in the back yard, then back inside to the sunroom, then the dining room where they hung there coats back up....then back to the party room where my husband had set up the "treasure".... cake, ice cream, and punch!

We even had shark's blood for our punch! To make this I took a punch bowl and had poured 7-up in it. Then with the kids watching I explained that my fruit punch was really sharks blood and I poured that into the 7-up. The punch swirled around like blood and mixed into the pop and then we served it! The kids thought it was great!

It was such a nice day for late November that we played outside after the food and gifts were opened! This was very helpful because they were all ready to go when their parents arrived and I passed out the treat bags for them to take home!

Just a cute little story to tell....

The other night we went to The Lodge for my grandma's 85th birthday. It was a wonderful dinner, great food, and good times with the family. After dinner, we went back to my grandma's house for cake and ice cream. At some point during the night it was decided that we wanted to watch the video from my grandparents 40th wedding anniversary party. This video was taken about 20 years ago...maybe closer to 25....I'll have to do the math...but not now.

Anyway, while we were watching I was pointing out to my kids who I was in the video. I was in about 8th grade. My little Emily wanted to know where she was. I said, "Oh honey, this is before you were born. You weren't even thought of yet!"

The next day my mom came over to watch the kids while David and I went to a meeting. Afterwards, I drove her home and she told me that they had been talking about being born first. They were referring to my brother and I and Jacob spoke up and said that he was born first. He then said, "I was thought of and then I was born!"

My mom asked him why he thought that and he said he had just learned it the night before because he heard us talking about it. I just think that is so cute!!

Later, I asked him about it also and he expanded by saying that he was thought of and then God put him in my tummy so he could be born......I love my little ones!

Fall Soccer 2008

The boys started soccer for the fall season and we had beautiful weather for it. Jacob and Caden are on the same team this year and it was fun to watch a lot of action with them both in there playing!

We fished for a couple hours this morning. Jacob caught two little ones! I thought that was a great job and he also thought it was cool that he let 7 get away! LOL I guess he was also counting the times he thought he had one only to find out the little fishy just ate his worm.

Then we had a picnic lunch...gotta love PB&J!

The kids have been bugging me all summer to let them have a lemonade stand. Here it is the end of the summer and it's starting to get colder and we have yet to have a stand.

So, the other day it was cold even in the afternoon so I said, "How about a hot cocoa stand?!"

The kids loved the idea and we did it!! Yippee

We sold quite a few cups of cocoa at 25 cents each and made $3.75!!! Some people even let us keep the change. I have cute kids! LOL

This summer has just flown by! I cannot believe the boys start school next week. They are really excited and are counting down the days on calanders that I printed out at the beginning of the month.

We have all the supplies and now I just need to get their name labels on everything.

Emily is kinda sad she didn't get to buy supplies. We explained to her that her pre-school will already have it all for her. Her school is going with a western theme this year and I have the perfect little custom for her to wear on the first day! I don't know who is more excited about her going to pre-school...her or me. I am just psyched that it is the same pre-school that I went to when I was 4!!

Friday Night Fun...

We had a ton of fun with the family tonight. David knows I love going out on Friday nights so earlier today he offered to take me shopping. Yippee!
So after he was done working it was off to the mall we went. I like to just walk around and look at stuff, this is something the David is not really into...he likes to shop and actually buy stuff. I do also like to buy stuff but I don't NEED to all the time.
We let the kids play on the coin operated vehicles for a bit, sugared them up with some candy out of the gumball machines, and then turned them loose in Build-A-Bear and said they couldn't get anything!! LOL They were really good about it and I was impressed since they usually bug bug bug to buy buy buy!! We did have them pick out their favorite animal just so we know for future reference.
We walked around a bit more and then headed across town to find a place to eat that didn't have a line to wait. Neither of us like waiting with three little ones in tow. We ended up at Ruby Tuesday and after having really poor and very slow service we figured this must be the norm for that particular restaurant and the reason why there wasn't a line....people know NOT to go there. :(
After dinner I needed to pick up some fabric for a new customer request so we went to Hobby Lobby. This is one of my FAV stores....they have so much great stuff and usually there are some really good sales...tonight was no exception. I picked up the fabric I needed and then totally scored on scrapbook supplies at 50% off! :) David even picked out some pictures for his office that were half off.
By this point it has already been a long day and long night out and the kids were super good the whole time so we took them for a special treat at Coldstone. This was a first for all of us and a last. Don't get me wrong it was good but not $20 good. That was way too much to pay for 5 little bowls of ice cream...oh well...it was the special time together that counted the most.
We are now home and the kids decided tonight would be the night for a camp out in mom and dad's room so they are all scattered about and sleeping; dreaming about a fun day at the zoo tomorrow...oh and don't forget the fair....we are going there too! My husband rocks!

Steam florets until soft and blend until smooth with food processor, add a nob of butter and a glug of cream....salt and pepper to taste!

We had these for dinner last night and everyone loved them. I had them this morning too with my scrambled eggs and added a bit of freshly grated parmesan cheese....even more delish!

I guess I fell off the wagon a bit. Well, more than a bit but I am back on track and going strong. Last night I was reading a health magazine and one article was about walking and I determined that I was going to start walking every day. This morning was my first day! Woo Hoo!
I did 30 minutes out and about in the neighborhood.

It felt really good even though I ate a bug. :(

Now off to the shower to get ready for the rest of my fun-filled day!

Ok, so the other day I posted that recipe for the Orea Cookie Balls....I had not yet tried MAKING them myself....I just knew I liked eating them....go figure. Well, tomorrow we are having a BBQ with our church group at our house so I thought it would be a great idea to make them to share.
Hmmmm....should have tried making them earlier so that I would know that they would not turn out quite right for me. Not that it should come as a surprise given my lack of expertise in the kitchen.
Anyway....the problem started with not having a double boiler to melt the chocolate....so I improvised. After I realized that it wasn't working quite right I decided to use that quick shell stuff that you put on ice cream. Well, so far it really isn't shelling up like it should so we will wait and see in the morning if I need to bake a cake, LOL....from a box!

Buying American....

I must admit that I used to wonder why people made such a fuss about buying American, but if we don't support ourselves then who will?
So....I am making a renewed effort to support my fellow Americans. This all kinda started when I moved to a small town last year. There are still little mom and pop kinda stores here. Yes, they have higher prices but it's worth it to pay more to support my neighbors. I started shopping in town as much as possible when we moved and this wonderful feeling I get when I do has motivated me to do more.
As a side note, with gas prices the way they are it would probably cost me more anyway to drive to a bigger city to buy the same things I can get in my town.
We made a purchase today from a company from right here in Iowa: Cookies BBQ sauce! Not only is it made in the USA and made in Iowa but it does NOT have any high fructose corn syrup in it!! That's another of my latest causes....to buy and support companies that make products with healthy ingredients.....I will save that blog for another day :)

Awesome Dessert Recipe!

I went to a baby shower this afternoon and I just had to come home and google a recipe for the most awesome dessert I have had in a long time. Here it is for you to make and see for yourself:

Oreo Cookie Balls

1 package Oreo cookies
1 (8 ounces) package cream cheese
1 package Almond Bark white chocolate

Put Oreo cookies in food processor, process until real fine. Place crumbs into a bowl and mix with cream cheese. Roll out mixture into marble size balls and place on cookie sheet. Put Oreo Cookie Balls in refrigerator to get cold. Take cookie balls out of refrigerator when cold and dip in melted white chocolate. Put cookie balls on wax paper to dry.

Yum yum yum!

Ugh! I should know better but David wanted to go to the Dairy Treat.... I have been doing so well eating healthy that it gave me stomache cramps. Poor me today!

On a happier note, Emily had her last ballet class today and I was able to watch her do a lot of different things. She has come so far from last fall and she really loves dancing. I can't wait until she gets into a full time class, she will really shine.

Back to Jacob....his lip/inner cheek is healing. It has a white colored scab-like thing on it and this is what the dentist office said would happen since it is in a wet environment. He says it doesn't hurt and I am not sure if he is just being a tough guy or if he did damage to a nerve. I am hoping that I am just a bit paranoid.

Caden has his last Mind Matters class tomorrow and is kinda sad but happy since he knows he will be going to kindergarten in the fall.

I really felt like I was having a great day yesterday doing more with the kids. I played with Caden and Emily outside. We looked around at our flowers and of course played on the swings. "Higher! Mom!" they both said over and over again.
In the afternoon I had to take Jacob to the dentist. I went to the school and picked him up. I was there just in time to see him read to the class from the Take Home Bear folder. It was just awesome to see my little man reading!
Then after the dentist it happened.... We were all watching Little Bear together (my FAV show) and David came in and noticed that Jacob had blood on his face. Well, come to find out that because his cheek was numb he had been chewing on the inside and didn't even know he was doing damage. It looked really bad and almost made me sick. Mainly I was upset about the pain I knew was to come for my hurt little man.
This morning it looked better, no more blood and it looks like it is healing yet it is really swollen.
I know Jacob is a tough little man and will get through this probably better than me.

A beginning....

I have been wanting to start a blog now for a while and just haven't been able to get around to it. That seems to be the story of my life...at most times. I just decided that I need to make the time. I need to make time to be the person I really want to be, instead of just thinking that someday it will happen. I am in charge and this is my new beginning!

Some things that I really want to change:

My weight needs to go down
My health needs to go up
Time spent with kids needs to increase
Time spent on computer needs to decrease LOL
Cleaning the house needs to be a priority everyday

A little note about my blog name....I love the Johnny Appleseed Grace that we sing at dinner and that is what inspired the name.

It occured to me the other day that it really is all about the Lord, he provides what we need....all things in life are like those apple seeds...blessings from God.
